About: A Self Reflective Study - A Series of Portraits
Naked, raw & honest
By Stehen Butkus
The capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning. According to one definition it involves paying critical attention to the practical values and theories which inform everyday actions, by examining practice reflectively and reflexively. This leads to developmental insight and understanding.
The project was a collaboration between me, Stephen Butkus (Photographer and Artist) and The Thief Hotel in Oslo. In the period of 8 days I locked myself in a room taking photographs of individuals from the artist and avant-garde network of Oslo and people around Norway. Then documenting a kind of self-reflective study - the skeletons and the reapers that may occur or merely just letting the idèa around self reflection make up the portrait. Photographing and documenting this by taking The Thief’s hotel locations and my universe in to the pictures and ending this with a exhibition where some of the work that was shown using the garage under The Thief Hotel.
While spending a lot of time in hotel rooms around the world it is actually the only place I can feel at home. A kind of freedom. I think its because a hotel room can't see. But there is most likely filled walls, furniture, minibars and bathtubs with memories and reflection. There is something special with that. Something i think we all feel when you sit down on that bed, looking around you.
Even though we are bound to be social, needing and selfish creatures, we are at the end utterly alone.
Portraying everyone in my own way - Naked, raw and honest.
